#52. mary tyler moore in ordinary people

making the transition from mary richard and laura petrie to beth jarrett was not going to be easy for any audience. as the cold and unaffected matriarch of an upper-class family coping with the death of a child, moore is sublime, bottling her emotions and maintaining a perfect facade for the neighbours, all the while having to reconnect with her second-favourite son conrad (timothy hutton) who has returned from a psychiatric facility. she pulls it off effortlessly.

*nominated for 1980 best actress oscar;
lost to sissy spacek in coal miner's daughter

greatest moment: see #51
