#93. salma hayek in frida

the role she was born to play, hayek channeled the great mexican painter frida kahlo so effortlessly, displaying equal parts comedy, musical, and intense dramatic skills. her grit and determination to bring the legend's story to the screen, coupled with a self-affirming performance, rightfully earned her her first oscar nomination.

* nominated for 2002 best actress oscar;
lost to nicole kidman in the hours

greatest moment: superior throughout, though the scene when kahlo walks in on her husband diego riviera (alfred molina) having sex with her sister christina (mia maestro), and the ensuing fight, is particularly explosive.
