#69. judi dench in notes on a scandal

one of our greatest actresses, dench gives (in my opinion) the best performance of her career (and yes, i have seen mrs. brown), as barbara covett, the deranged lesbian principal of a london-suburb school who befriends the new art teacher, sheba (cate blanchett). when covett learns of an affair with a 15-year old student, rather than report the offense, she uses blackmail in an attempt to start a relationship of her own with sheba. a role drastically different from her early works in merchant / ivory costume dramas and on the london stage, dench is maniacal. intense. brilliant.

*nominated for 2006 best actress oscar;
lost to helen mirren in the queen

greatest moment: practically coming to blows with sheba outside of the young woman's house, threatening to reveal her secret.
