#64. valentina cortese in day for night

a legend in her native italy, cortese is simply brilliant as severine, the former screen diva, in truffaut's classic film about -- essentially, making a film. in fact, cortese was so brilliant that in 1973, when she lost her oscar, winner ingrid bergman apologized profusely onstage, stating: "forgive me valentina, i didn't want to win."

*nominated for 1973 best supporting actress oscar;
lost to ingrid bergman for murder on the orient express
