#85. rinko kikuchi in babel

though she never uttered a word, kikuchi's brilliant performance as chieko, the deeply tormented deaf-mute girl from japan whose relationship with her father is strained after the suicide of her mother, is really the only interesting character (aside from fellow oscar-nominated co-star adriana barraza) in the epic tale of how one gunshot affects three different families on three different continents.

*nominated for 2007 best supporting actress oscar;
lost to jennifer hudson in dreamgirls

greatest moment: audible only to those around her, chieko's hypnotic, drug-induced dancing to earth, wind & fire in the japanese nightclub.
