at 14, tom tykwer's run lola run was the first foreign film i ever saw, henceforth establishing my love (and preference for) european cinema. also, you know when you see your first film and you remember being captured by a really beautiful and bad-ass female character? yeah, her name is franka potente. as the titular character, potente is "powerful" (potente in italian) and fearless, running the streets of a busy german city, dodging hobos, nuns and bicycle thieves, in an effort to find her boyfriend 20,000 marks in 20 minutes before he is killed by his dealer. set against a throbbing techno score, coupled with brilliant cinematgoprahy, run lola run is like a visual assault on the senses, led by one of modern cinema's greatest heroines.
