#65. isabelle huppert in the piano teacher

playing the eccentric erika kohut, an aging piano teacher at a prestigious musical conservatory in vienna, huppert proves yet again why she is one of the greatest actresses in french cinema today, bravely channeling her character, who just happens to have a penchant for voyeurism, pornography and mutilation. when walter (benoit magimel) espies the icy erika at one of her recitals, she is unresponsive and reticent, however with more provocation, particularly by walter's exquisite rendition of schumann, a connection is made -- however, it may be more than what either had bargained for. huppert, unanimously, won the best actress award at the cannes film festival for her role.

greatest moment: huppert's intense scenes with her mother (annie giradot)
