almost all of poitier's earlier works (the defiant ones, lilies of the field, guess who's coming to dinner) dealt with the then-taboo subject of racism, but none more important than norman jewison's (who has made many excellent pictures on the same subject) in the heat of the night. as iconic a character as mr. tibbs is nowadays, sidney would not take the role unless one particular scene, his greatest moment (see below), was altered, and only if the script met with the approval of his father, whom the actor spent his entire life devoted to honoring. mr. tibbs is obviously affective and the ultimate good-guy, not to mention a testament to the devotion and dedication that one man gave to his craft.
greatest line: they call me mr. tibbs!
greatest moment: after questioning a stuffy old white man about a murder, virgil tibbs is slapped across the face by the accused. without breaking stride, tibbs slaps him right back.
