milos forman had to bend over backwards to get this picture insured after hiring courtney love, who surprised everybody with her performance as larry flynt's bisexual, heroin-addicted wife, althea -- a role that many considered not a far stretch from love's tumultuous marriage to kurt cobain (an eerie foreshadowing of a life that could have been). instead, love portrays this misguided woman with such conviction and unabashed sincerity, that you realize how difficult it must be to portray yourself on screen. love was famously left off of the ballot on oscar night in 1996, yet she did win numerous critics awards -- including the new york, boston and chicago film festival's best supporting actress award.
greatest moment: when althea finally succumbs to aids, after being pulled out from the bottom of the bathtub, dying in larry's arms.
