mike leigh has an innate gift for discovering talent. he has done it with so many different actors, especially women (as this list will prove), that it is hard to keep track. his latest discovery had a minor role in his 2000 picture, the underrated
all or nothing, and like many critics she stuck in the mind. taking center stage this time as the bubbly and eternally optimistic poppy, whose love for life is unlike any film character in recent memory, sally hawkins is pitch perfect. there is not one scene in this film where hawkins fails to charm -- be it at the chiropractor's, taking spanish dance lessons, or deflecting insults from her racist driving instructor (eddie marsan). it is by far one of the best performances of the past ten years. and others agree -- hawkins won just about every critics award for best actress (los angeles film critics, national film critics society, berlin film festival's silver bear, golden globe best actress musical/comedy), but failed to get an oscar nomination (most likely because of that bitch angelina jolie).
