in perhaps too uncomfortable a film for academy voters, cox is pitiful, detestable, disgusting -- yet spellbinding as pedophile big john, who's relationship with 15 year-old howie (paul dano) is gripping and incredibly hard to watch, especially as their intertwining secrets and stories unfold. 

greatest moment: john's brutal proposition to howie whilst watching porn
