i have always loved j.k. simmons, which is why the lack of award consideration, for his perfect portrayal of mac macguff, baffles me. as exuberant and appropriate a choice ellen page was for the titular character, i still think his performance was superior, as the quintessential modern-day dad: lovable, wise and not afraid to show how un-hip he really is. a nuanced compliment to all the other great fathers of cinema, mac macguff is timeless in a fitting supporting role.
greatest moment: any one of his numerous heart-to-hearts with his daughter
