making the transition from mary richard and laura petrie to beth jarrett was not going to be easy for any audience. as the cold and unaffected matriarch of an upper-class family coping with the death of a child, moore is sublime, bottling her emotions and maintaining a perfect facade for the neighbours, all the while having to reconnect with her second-favourite son conrad (timothy hutton) who has returned from a psychiatric facility. she pulls it off effortlessly.*nominated for 1980 best actress oscar;
