in tony richardson's classic, murray melvin plays the lovable, kindhearted geoffrey who befriends the rambunctious jo (rita tushingham), serving as her protector and best friend. a controversial film for 1962, geoffrey is gay and jo is pregnant by a black sailor, making for a unique and utterly dependable couple of social misfits who do what they can to get by. melvin won the best actor award from the cannes film festival for his role.
