davidson plays dil, the mysterious hairdresser-by-day, night-club singer-by night, who also happens to be the girlfriend of british soldier jody (forest whitaker) whom i.r.a. operative fergus (stephen rae) promises to protect after jody is killed. upon following her around london, fergus becomes smitten with dil and ultimately falls in love. however, he is repulsed to discovers that dil is a transexual. a very complex and highly controversial tale, davidson is gritting and surprisingly convincing as a man playing a woman. he only made one other major film after
the crying game before returning to his first love -- fashion.
