no easy feat for any actor, hulce played the complex role of mozart, legendary composer -- and hysterically, offensive baffoon -- with such an over-the-top enthusiasm, providing a great juxtaposition to the subtly restrained performance given by co-star f. murray abraham as rival antonio salieri. hulce was loud, obnoxious, vulgar, and perfectly annoying -- giving perhaps more of an effort than abraham. this film was one of those rare examples of when a tie for best actor seemed the most reasonable option.
